Multiply
To add the same number again and again.
Example: 3 x 4 means 3 groups of 4
Divide
To split a number into equal parts or groups
Example: 12 ➗ 4 means split 12 into 4 equal groups
Product
The answer you get when you multiply two numbers.
Example: 3 x 5 = 15, so 15 is the product
Factor
A number that divides exactly into another number.
Example: 2 is a factor of 8 because 2 x 4 = 8
Multiple
A number you get when you multiply a number by something.
Example: 15 is a multiple of 3 because 3 x 5 = 15.
Remainder
What’s left over when you divide and it doesn’t go into it exactly.
Example: 10 ➗ 3 = 3 with a remainder of 1
Equal
Means the same amount or value.
Example: 6 + 2 is equal to 8.
Times
Another way of saying multiply.
Example: 4 times 2 means 4 x 2
Group
A set or collection of things. In maths, we often put things into groups when multiplying or dividing.
Example: 12 can be made into 3 groups of 4.
Share
To split something into parts or give out evenly.
Example: If you share 10 sweets between 2 people, each get 5.
Array
A neat way to show multiplication using rows and columns.
Example: 3 rows of 4 dots make a 3 x 4 array.
Total
The whole amount when you add things together.
Example: If you have 5 apples and get 3 more, the total is 8.
Halve
To split something into two equal parts.
Example: Half of 10 is 5.
Double
To make something twice as much.
Example: Double 6 is 12.
Calculate
To work out the answer by thinking or using a method.
Example: You can calculate 7 + 8 in your head or on paper.
