Matter and classification Flashcards
(17 cards)
Describe matter
Being made up of particles whose properties determine the observable characteristics of matter and its reactivity,
Define strength
A material’s ability to withstand an applied force or stress without breaking or failing.
Define brittle
Hard but likely to break easy.
Define malleable
Ability to be hammered or pressed into shape without breaking or cracking.
Define ductile
Ability to be stretched into a wire.
Define density
The mass per unit volume of a substance.
Define boiling point
The temperature of a liquid at which its vapour pressure equals the external (atmospheric) pressure.
Define melting point
The temperature at which a solid, given sufficient heat, becomes a liquid.
Define an element
A pure substance consisting of one type of atom.
Define a compound
A pure substance consisting of two or more different elements.
Define a pure substance
A substance that cannot be separated into simpler components by physical methods.
Describe metalloids as
Having properties of metals and non-metals.
Define electrical conductor
A material that allows the flow of charge.
Define semiconductor
A substance that can conduct electricity under some conditions, but not others, making it a good medium for the control of electrical current.
Define electrical insulator
A material that prevents the flow of charge.
What is a thermal conductor?
A material that allows heat to pass through easily.
What is a thermal insulator?
A material that does not allow heat to pass through it.
