What are elements ?
Elements are a substance that is made up of only one type of atom .
What do compounds always contain?
A compound always contains a particular amount of each element. it has a fixed composition - a fixed amount of atoms in each molecule, example: H2O( two hydrogen atoms to one oxygen atom)
Naming compound steps
- ) write down the name of the metal
- )write down the name of the non-metal
- ) change the ending of the non-metal to the word to “ide”
e. g. magnesium+oxygen= magnesium oxide
Steps for compounds containing more than two elements, compounds containing two elements plus oxygen.
1.) write down the name of the metal
2.) write down the name of the non-metal
3.)for the non-metal word, change the ending to “ate”
E.g:aluminium + bromine + oxygen = aluminium bromate
When Writing the formula for compounds what comes first?
The metal
For every titanium atom, there are two oxygen atoms.

What is the reactant?
The two elements that make up a compound
e.g. reactants in H2O are both oxygen and hydrogen
What is a product?
A product is what is made out of the reactants, products are the chemically bonded elements.
e.g. in water H2O is the product of the reactants hydrogen and oxygen.
What are the four tell-tale signs of a chemical reaction?
- )The temperature of the test tube increases
- ) the colour changes
- ) it changes state
- ) bubbling happens

e.g. sodium chloride, water
What are the products and reactants in the water?
Hydrogen and oxygen =reactants
H2O=products

What is a molecule?
A molecule is two atoms chemically bonded .
some molecules are compounds, because they can be made up of two elements
although some molecules are only two of the same elements chemically bonded
What does combining the symbols of the atoms in a molecule or compound do?
It gives you the formula for the molecule/compound
Remember… just to clarify …
The atoms of some elements join together in molecules. Molecules are made of of two or more atoms chemically bonded. Molecules can be formed by two or more atoms of the same element, or by atoms from two or more different elements.
Definition of a substance…
A substance is a material or matter that something is made out of
Eg;
Water,paint, glass, stone, metal,air, sugar,salt.

All atoms in elements are the same.
What is the smallest part of an element that can exist.
The smallest part of an element that can exist is called an atom.
Compare the particles in different elements.
The atoms of an element are different to other elements’ atoms.

Polymers are very long molecules made up of identical repeating groups of atoms.
Eg:nylon,polyester,Teflon,silk,wool,DNA
