Electromagnetics Flashcards
(28 cards)
What two things can magnets do?
Repel and attract.
What are the 4 magnetic materials?
Iron,Cobalt,Nickel,Steel.
What is a magnet?
A material that exerts a magnetic force on other magnets or magnetic materials.
What is a magnetic field?
The region around a magnet where a magnetic force can be felt.
What are the two ends of a magnet called.
North and South
Bar magnets are …..
Permanent magnets
What is the law of magnets?
Unlike poles attract
Like poles repel
What is the direction of the magnetic force field ?
Away from the
North
Towards the
South
What happens if a magnetic material is placed in a magnetic field?
It will experience a force.
How do you show the shape of a magnetic field?
By drawing magnetic field lines.
What is the magnetic field of a magnet?
The region around a magnet where a magnetic force is.
Electromagnets are…
Temporary magnets
What can you do to electromagnets?
Turn them on and of.
(Turn the current on,the magnet will be on)
(Turn current off,the magnet will be off)
What 3 things does the strength of an electromagnet rely on?
- )Weather it has a core of iron
- )how many coils the wire has
- )how much current flows through the wire
What do bar and electromagnets magnets have in common?
Both electromagnets and bar magnets have the same magnetic field around them .
How do you make an electromagnet?
Using a piece of coiled wire with a current flowing through it.
How does the strength of an electromagnet change ?(1)
The further from the electromagnet, the weaker the force .
What is a domain?
Little groups of atoms that act like tiny magnets .Each little group of atoms is called a domain.
Why does a normal piece of iron, nickel cobalt not seem to be magnetic?
Because all the domains are pointing in different directions, cancelling each other out.
What happens when a piece of iron is magnetised?
The domains line up, no longer cancelling each other out .
How can you make a magnet?
- )You can magnetise a piece of iron by stroking it (You have to stroke it in the same direction, so that all the domains lineup )
- )you can magnetise a piece of iron by leaving it next to another magnet for awhile (Eventually the domains move around so they are lined up)
How can you de-magnetise a magnet?
By getting the domains to point in different directions
- )heating the magnet (I know why)
- )hammer a magnet(vibrations de-align the domains cancelling each other out)
How can you NOT remove magnetism?
NOT by cutting it up. If you break a magnet into two, the 2 halves would be both magnets, each with the North and South Pole. This is because all the domains would be still aligned.
