mechanics of breathing Flashcards
(6 cards)
what does mechanics of breathing mean? what is it also called?
also named ventilation.
it is the process by which air is moved into and out of the lungs
what structures are involed in the mechanics of breathing?
diaphragm, intercostal muscles, ribcage, lungs
what are the 2 processes involved in the mechanics of breathing?
inspiration( inhalation) and expiration( exhalation)
What happens in inspiration?
diaphragm contracts up and moves down extending chest cavity
intercostal muscles contract and the ribcages moves up and outwards.
pressure decreases
increase in volume due to diaphragm moving down and ribs moving up.
air will move from a high pressure outside of body to lower pressure inside.
what happens in expiration?
-diaphragm relaxes, bulges into chest cavity
-ribs move down and in
-intercostal muscles relax
-volume decrease due to diaphragm moving up and ribs moving down.
-pressure of air increases
-air flows from a high pressure inside the body to a low pressure outside of body
