Media and Cabling Flashcards
(50 cards)
What is ‘media’ in networking?
It is the physical material used to transmit data.
What are three main types of networking media?
- Copper (e.g., Cat6)
- Fiber Optic (e.g., ISP backbones)
- Radio Waves (e.g., Wi-Fi)
What are the speed and max distance of Cat 5?
100 Mbps, 100 meters.
What are the speed and max distance of Cat 5e?
1 Gbps, 100 meters.
What are the speed and max distance of Cat 6?
10 Gbps up to 55 meters.
What are the speed and max distance of Cat 6a?
10 Gbps, 100 meters.
What are the speed and max distance of Cat 7?
10 Gbps, 100 meters (Not officially TIA/EIA certified).
What are the speed and max distance of Cat 8?
25–40 Gbps, 30 meters (Used in data centers only).
What is UTP?
Unshielded Twisted Pair – cheaper, more flexible, easier to install.
What is STP?
Shielded Twisted Pair – protects against EMI but harder to install.
What is RG-6 used for and its approximate range?
Internet/TV; up to ~300 meters.
What is RG-59 used for and its approximate range?
CCTV (legacy use); shorter range and limited bandwidth.
What is DAC (Direct Attach Copper)?
Pre-assembled cables used for short connections (up to 7–15 meters), supports speeds up to 100 Gbps.
What is Twinax used for?
High-speed, short-range server connections in data centers.
What is plenum-rated cable and when is it used?
Fire-retardant cable used in air ducts.
What is non-plenum cable?
Cheaper cable that releases toxic fumes when burned.
What is an RJ-11 connector used for?
Telephony; uses 6P2C configuration for voice.
What is an RJ-45 connector used for?
Ethernet networking; supports Cat 5–8 cables and uses 8P8C.
What is an F-Type connector used for?
Cable TV or internet over coaxial cables (RG-6, RG-59).
What is a BNC connector used for?
Professional video and RF; secure with push-twist lock.
What is a straight-through cable used for?
Connecting different devices like PC ↔ Switch (DTE ↔ DCE), with same pinout (usually 568B on both ends).
What is a crossover cable used for?
Connecting similar devices like PC ↔ PC or Switch ↔ Switch (DTE ↔ DTE), with 568A on one end and 568B on the other.
What is MDIX and what does it do?
A feature in modern switches that automatically detects and adjusts for straight-through or crossover cables.
What are the color codes for pins 1 and 2 in the 568B standard?
- Pin 1 – Orange/White
- Pin 2 – Orange
