Media representations are behind the social/economic reality.
This has improved more recently.
However - Majority of journalists/reporters/executives in the media are mostly men.
What do Marxist feminists say about women?
Stereotypical media representations ae based in economics.
They are a by-product of the media
(Conglomerate’s need to make a profit)
The media is male dominated so portrayls of women are traditional in TV/films/news in order to make money.
Feminist views of career assertive women does not make profit so it is not shown.
What do Radical feminists argue about women in the media?
The media uses traditional hegemonic portrayals of femininity to subordinate women into a small range of roles in society.
It is not a coincidence that the media product symbolically relegate women to subordinate positions.
(Motherhood/Sex objects) - (While they are fighting for equality)
Media allows for patriarchy to remain unchallenged hiding the opportunities for women.

Magazines promote assertiveness/being in control/independence for women.
