Also known as..

A

Known as surgical ankylosis, the surgical fusion (joining together) of two bones to stiffen a joint, such as an ankle, elbow, or shoulder (arthr/o means joint, and -desis means to bind, tie together). This procedure is designed to treat severe arthritis or a damaged joint.

What is arthrolysis?

A

The surgical loosening of an ankylosed joint (arthr/o means joint, and -lysis means loosening or setting free) Note: suffix -lysis also means breaking down or destruction and may indicate either a pathologic state or therapeutic procedure.
