8 cranial; 14 facial bones
What is a suture?
An immovable joint
What does TMJ stand for?
Temporomandibular joint
How many vertebrae are in the spinal column?
26 vertebrae
What are the cervical vertebrae?
C1-C7 (1st vertebra is called atlas and 2nd is called axis)
What are the thoracic vertebrae?
T1-T12
What are the lumbar vertebrae?
L1-L5
What is the sacrum composed of?
5 fused bones
What is the coccyx composed of?
4-5 fused bones
What does the thorax consist of?
12 pairs of ribs joined by cartilage to the breastbone
What is the axial skeleton?
Consists of the skull, spinal column, and thorax
What is the appendicular skeleton?
Everything apart from the axial skeleton
What should you study?
The entire skeleton and memorize all the bones
What is the diaphysis?
Long bone shaft composed of bone tissue
What is bone marrow?
Cavity containing the yellow form of bone marrow; fats
What is the epiphysis?
End of a long bone
What is the metaphysis?
Between diaphysis and epiphysis
What is the epiphyseal plate?
The growth plate
What are the types of bones?
Long, short, flat, irregular, sesamoid
What is an articulation?
Joint
What is a symphysis?
Slightly movable joint
What is a synovial joint?
Freely moving joint (aka diarthrosis)
What do tendons do?
Attach muscles to bones
What is synovial fluid?
Joint-lubricating fluid secreted by the synovial membrane
