What are the concepts of medical terminology based on?

What is the order of suffix, prefix, and root when determining the meaning of a medical term?
Root, prefix, suffix.
What is a compound word in medical terminology?
A word that contains more than one root.
What are combining vowels usually?
Usually ‘o’, but can be ‘a’, ‘e’, or ‘i’.
What happens to words ending in ‘x’ when a suffix is added?
The ‘x’ is changed to a ‘g’ or a ‘c’.
If a consonant precedes the ‘x’, it changes to ‘g’ (e.g., pharynx becomes pharyngeal). If a vowel precedes the ‘x’, it changes to ‘c’ (e.g., thorax becomes thoracotomy).
What happens to suffixes beginning with ‘rh’?
The ‘r’ becomes doubled.
What is the first rule of pronouncing medical terms?
Any lone vowel at the end of a syllable has a long pronunciation.
What is the second rule of pronouncing medical terms?
A vowel in a syllable has short pronunciation.
What is the third rule of pronouncing medical terms?
If a vowel at the end needs short pronunciation, add an ‘H’.
