In both periods, individuals played a key role in improving medical knowledge and treatments.
In the Industrial period, Edward Jenner developed the smallpox vaccination.
In the Modern period, individuals like Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin, leading to antibiotics.
This shows that in both periods, individuals made breakthroughs that led to major changes in disease prevention or treatment.
Explain one way in which ideas about the cause of disease in the medieval were different from the ideas about the cause of disease in the Renaissance period. (4)
Medieval
Caused by punishment from God’s punishment and astrology.
Renaissance
Shift to more natural explanations such as miasma.
Renaissance thinkers began questioning old ideas and used observation and dissection to understand the body.
This shows a move from religious/supernatural explanations to more scientific thinking during the Renaissance.
Explain one way in which the role of the Government in medicine in the period of 1800-1900 was different from the role of the Government in medicine from 1900-present.
One key difference is the level of government involvement in public health.
In 1800–1900, the government followed a laissez-faire approach, meaning it avoided interfering in people’s health.
For example, the 1848 Public Health Act was not compulsory and many towns ignored it.
From 1900 onwards, the government became much more involved, creating the NHS in 1948, launching vaccination programmers, and creating campaigns such as change for life.

Makes healthcare universally accessible and it shows and increase in Government responsibility.
How does the discovery of anesthetics improve surgery?
Less deaths from shock pain so more complex operations can be done.
