What was a motte and Bailey castle

A

As soon as a lord got land from the King he built a castle on it.A motte and Bailey consisted of a motte(hill) moat(ditch around castle sometimes filled with water) a fort to spot enemies attacking and the Bailey were the knight and his Soliders lived
