Give five reasons why the Renaissance started in Italy and expand on your answer

A
  • The old Roman empire in Italy-There was many ruins left of the old Ancient Roman buildings
  • The influence of Greek scholars- In 1453, the Turks conquered the Greek city of Constantinople.Greek scholars escaped to Italy.They brought manuscripts this meant that the Italians were interested in Greek ideas as well
  • Wealthy Italian merchants-Italy was rich
  • The influence of new ideas-Italy had water on almost every side of it.This meant they travelled and traded a lot a foreign people shared new ideas with them
  • Independent city states-In the rest of Europe, kings and queens ruled the land.But Italy had no overall king.It was divided into city states and each city had its own ruler.The citizens were very independent and were open to new ideas

What do you know about Cosimo and literature

A
  • He sent agents around Europe to search monastery libraries for old, forgotten manuscripts.If they found any, they were to copy them and send the copies back to Florence.
  • He built a library to house his manuscripts.It became the largest library in Europe.It was also the first public library because it was open to everyone
  • He also set up an academy where scholars could study manuscripts. He called it the Platonic Academy after the Greek writer Plato

  • He also paid for many public buildings.For example, he paid a famous architect, Brunelleschi, to build a parish church in Florence in the new Renaissance style

A

At this time Florence was ruled by a republic.That means the people elected a government.But Cosimo used his money to make sure his friends were elected to the government.That made him the real ruler of Florence.

  • He ruled the city for nearly thirty years
  • He made alliances with other cities. These alliances kept the peace between the different states of Italy and allowed trade to flourish
  • Under his rule Florence became the cultural capital of Europe

He was a great sportsman, who also wrote poetry and was a patron of the arts. Because of this he was called Lorenzo the Magnificent.Among the artists he supported was Michealangelo and Leonardo de Vinci.
