Q

What is meiosis?

A

A process of cell division where the number of chromosomes is halved so the zygote ends up with the same number of chromosomes as it parents.

Q

Steps for meiosis

A

Homologous chromosomes come to lie closely alongside each other and behave like a single chromosome.

  1. Nuclear membrane disappears. A spindle forms. Chromosomes are separated. The cell starts to constrict.
  2. One long and one short chromosome go the either end of the cell. Cell contains only 2 chromosomes. Chromatids become clear.
  3. 2 new spindles form at right angles of original spindle. Chromatids separate and pass to opposite ends. The cell constricts at right angles to the first constriction.
  4. Cell division is completed forming 4 gametes.
