Q

Iconic memory

A

Studied by George Sperling. He found that people could see more than they can remember. This is a classic psychological experiment where subjects were shown A grid containing letters. they were instructed to write down the letters of a particular line although subjects were able to do this, they inevitably forgot the other letters at the time that it took to write the first ones down. This proved that sensory memory exists.

Q

Short-term memory

A

Temporary, lasts only for a few seconds or minutes. Is thought to be largely auditory and items are coded phonologically.

Q

George Miller

A

Discovered that short-term memory has the capacity of about seven items, plus or -2 items.

A

Grouping items together. Can increase the capacity of short-term memory

Q

Rehearsal

A

The process by which items and short-term memory are transferred into long-term memory. Primary rehearsal simply involves repeating the material in order to hold it in short-term memory. Secondary rehearsal involves organizing and understanding material in order to transfer into long-term memory.

Q

Long-term memory

A

Capable of permanent retention. Most items are learned semantically, for meaning.

9
Q

Recognition

A

A process that requires subjects to recognize things learned in the past. Multiple-choice tests tap recognition.

Q

Savings

A

Measures how much information about a subject remains in long-term memory by assessing how long it takes to learn something the second time as opposed to the first time.

Q

Encoding specificity principle

A

Present in long-term memory. Material is more likely to be remembered if it is retrieved in the same context in which it was stored.

15
Q

Procedural memory

A

Knowing how to do something

16
Q

Declarative memory

A

Knowing a fact

17
Q

Explicit memory

A

Knowing something and being consciously aware of knowing it

18
Q

Implicit memory

A

Knowing something without being aware of knowing it

19
Q

Decay theory

A

Posits that memories fade with time

20
Q

Interference theory

A

Suggests that competing information blocks memory retrieval

21
Q

Clustering

A

The brains tendency to group together similar items and memory whether they are learning together or not.

22
Q

Flashbulb memories

A

Memories that appear burned into the brain, though often in accurately.
