Mendellian Genetics Flashcards
(15 cards)
Heredity
The passing of traits from parents to offspring.
Gene
A specific section of DNA that codes for a trait.
Trait
A characteristic which is passed from parent to offspring.
Allele
The different possible combinations of a trait.
Genotype
Condensing a large section of DNA and representing it as a single letter.
Phenotype
States the physical appearance that is expressed.
Homozygous
Having identical genes (alleles) for one trait
Heterozygous
Having two different genes (alleles) for one trait
Dominant
Dominant alleles mask recessive alleles. Always represented with the uppercase.
Recessive
The ‘weaker’ gene, only seeing if there is no dominant gene present. Always represented with the lowercase.
History of genetics
Gregor Mendel - Father of Genetics
Mendels conclusions
- Characteristics are inherited.
- Characteristics have multiple different forms called alleles.
- Some alleles are dominant and some are recessive.
P generation
Parental generation
F1 generation
First set of offspring from P generation
F2 generation
Next set of offspring product of F1 interbreeding
