sex Linked Triats Flashcards
(17 cards)
X linked genes
Genes found on the X chromosomes
Y linked genes
Genes are found on the Y chromosomes
X chromosomes
Contains genes that code for all aspects of a female sex development and genes unrelated to gender
Y chromosomes
Much smaller than X. Carries small number of genes, most are for “male characteristics”
Most known sex linked traits are?
X linked since it’s larger
Male chromosomes
XY
female chromosomes
XX
Carriers
A person that has one dominant and one recessive gene for a trait. Only females can be carries if sex linked traits.
Examples of sex linked traits and disorders
Male pattern baldness, red green colour blindness, myopia, night blindness, hemophilia
Hemophilia
Characterised by uncontrolled bleeding. Sex linked disorder caused by errors in the dna that codes protein involved in blood clotting.
How does a male show a recessive sex linked trait?
He must inherit the recessive trait from his mother
How many chromosomes do humans have?
23 pairs = 46
One pair of chromosomes is related to the sex of an individual
called sex chromosomes
Sex linked traits
Traits controlled by genes which are located on the X and Y chromosomes
Autosomal
Gene and inheritance patterns numbered from one to 22.
Autosomal recessive
A genetic condition is passed down when a person inherit two copies of a mutated gene, one from each parent.
Autosomal dominant
A genetic condition can be passed down from a parent to child we’re only one copy of a mutated gene is needed to cause the condition.
