Causes of mental illness
Biochemical, Genetic, and Environmental
Dysthymic Disorder
less severe syndrome of chronic, mild depression; lack energy, short-tempered, overly pessimistic; may cycle into major depression
Bi-Polar Disorder (Manic-Depressive)
alternating between mania and depression;•Manic = overactive, talkative, energetic depressed = all symptoms of major depression
Seasonal Affective Disorder
occurs in winter months, when sunlight levels are low; irritability, apathy, carb craving and weight gain, increased sleep, general sadness
Generalized Anxiety Disorder
debilitating; treatable; 6 months to diagnose; restless, easily fatigued, difficulty concentrating, irritability, muscle tension, sleep disturbances
Panic Disorders
acute anxiety that results in intense physical reaction; starts abruptly, peaks around 10 mins, lasts 30 mins
Phobic Disorders
persistent and irrational fear of specific object, activity, or situation; social phobia: 7%
PTSD
delayed response to serious trauma; flashbacks/nightmares, dissociation or perceived detachment of the mind from emotional state, hyper arousal, mood swings, insomnia
OCD
Obsession=when an idea or thought takes over one’s mind and cannot be forgotten; Compulsion=unreasonable need to behave in a certain way, is 1+ hour per day; understand that behaviors are irrational, can’t stop them; adolescence or late adulthood
Schizophrenia
visual and auditory hallucinations;, inability to sort out stimuli and make appropriate responses; altered sense of self; irrational fears that something controls them
Anorexia Nervosa
refuses to eat enough food to maintain normal body weight; extremely restricted eating, pursuit of thinness, fear of gaining weight, distorted body image
Bulimia Nervosa
binges and purges, usually through vomiting or laxatives; chronically inflamed throat, acid reflux, intestinal distress, electrolyte imbalance, dehydration
Binge Eating Disorder
loses control over his/her eating, not followed by fasting; guilt/shame leading to more binge-eating; eating when full or not hungry, eating until uncomfortably full, eating alone or in secret, feeling ashamed about eating habits
Dissociative Identity Disorder
2+ distinct split identities that have power over a person’s behavior; distinct memory; each has own posture, gestures
Body Dysmorphic Disorder
imagined or physical defect leading to them thinking they are ugly; some features of eating disorders and OCD; areas of concern could be skin, hair, facial features, weight

specialize in recognizing and treating abnormal behavior
Psychiatrists
specialize in recognizing and treating abnormal behavior;able to prescribe medications and admit to local hospitals
Neurologist
detecting and treating organic disorders of the brain and nervous system
Suicide
- 3rd cause of death for 15-24 year olds
- LGBTQ 4x more likely
- 90% of ppl who commit suicide have diagnosable mental disorder; depression and substance abuse
- 75-80% give indication of intentions; recent loss, inability to let go of grief, change in personality, sexual dysfunction, self-hatred, themes of death, changes in appearance
