Agoraphobia
fear of being in in situations where escape may be difficult or embarrassing, or might not be available in the event of panic symptoms
Alcohol use disorder (AUD)
a drinking pattern that results in significant and recurrent consequences that reflect loss of control over alcohol use
Alzheimer’s disease
an irreversible form of dementia characterized by progressive declines in bodily and cognitive functions, eventually leading to death. (70% of all dementia cases)
Alzheimer’s disease continuum
the gradual progression of Alzheimer’s disease, starting with hidden brain changes, followed by noticeable memory problems, and eventually leading to physical disability.
Behavior therapy
a type of psychotherapy that focuses on and attempts to alter current behavior. (underlying causes of the problem may not be addressed)
Beta amyloid
a type of protein involved in the formation of neuritic plaques, both in normal aging and Alzheimer’s disease
Beta-amyloid cascade hypothesis
the process in which beta amyloid deposits create neuritic plaques, that in turn lead to neurofibrillary tangles, that cause neuronal death and, if severe, Alzheimers
Cognitive therapy
a type of psychotherapy aimed at altering the way people think in order to cure some forms of pathology, especially depression
Delerium
a disorder characterized by disturbance of consciousness and a change in cognition that develop over a short period of time
Dementia
a cluster of diseases that are characterized by cognitive decline
Internal belief symptoms
what someone tells themself about why certain things that are happening
Mental status exam
a short screening test that assesses mental competence, usually used as a brief indicator of dementia or other cognitive impairment
Spaced retrieval
a behavioral, implicit-internal memory intervention used in early and middle staged dementia
(repeatedly recalling information just before it would be forgotten, helping it stick in long-term memory)
Sundowning
when people exhibit an increase of symptoms later in the day
Vascular dementia
a form of dementia caused by a series of small strokes
