meta analysis Flashcards

1
Q

what is the process of using meta analysis?

A

it’s a research method that uses secondary data from a large number of studies which involve the same research questions and methods of research.

Q

meta analysis can involve quantative analysis. What does this entail?

A

statistical analysis of the combined data results to calculate effect size–D of the meta analysis which gives an overall statistical measure of difference or relationship between variables.

Q

what is a weakness of meta analysis?

A

-prone to publication bias.

-researcher may not select all the relevant studies.

-incorrect conclusions can be drawn.

-leaving out data with negative results.

therefore data will be bias as it only represents some of the relevant data.

Q

what are the advantages of using a case study?

A

-rich and interesting data, high degree of ecological validity/realism.

-allows study of rare cases, where large samples cant provide such information.

-starting point for further research

Q

what are the disadvantages of a case study?

A

-low reliability, due to findings not being able to be replicated.

-may be subjective as the relationship between interviewer can effect results

-time consuming

-large amounts of data may lead to bias in selection.

-lacks population validity, low participant numbers

less scientific, idiographic nature.
