High voltage applied at tip –> sample becomes aerosol of charged droplets.

High T and flow of drying gas in front of ionisation source –> solvent evaporation and drops diminish in size

1 is primary m/z selector

2 - fragmentation in presence of inert gas –> characteristic daughter ion fringes and analyte collision.

3 -m/z selection reoccurs.
