Methods of studying the brain Flashcards

1
Q

What is a post mortem

A

A way of investigating the brain after death. Usually when an interesting behaviour was shown in their lifetime

Q

Positives of post mortem

A

Vital in establishing key processes of the brain from an early stage

Q

Negatives of post mortem

A

causation is an issue as it is a case study. Low temporal resolution.

6
Q

What is an EEG

A

Measures electrical activity within the brain via electrodes which are fixed to the scalp. Measures the neurons. Records the brainwave patterns providing an overall brain activity measure.

9
Q

Positives of an EEG

A

Has been useful in studying sleep and epilepsy. Has high temporal resolution.

10
Q

Weaknesses of an EEG

A

Relies on generalised information so can’t pinpoint locations of activity. Only shows cortical activity.

Q

What is an ERP

A

Types of brainwaves which are triggered by particular events. All brain activity is filtered out apart from those which relate to the specific task. How the brain responds to an event.

Q

Positives of an ERP

A

More specific than and ERP. Used to measure cognitive functions and deficits.

Q

Negatives of an ERP

A

needs all other sound filtered out Can’t tell any structural changes.

16
Q

What is an fMRI

A

Detects changes in blood oxygen levels and flow as a result of neural brain activity in specific parts of the brain. Measures blood oxygen loss after going through organs.

17
Q

Spacial research of fMRI

A

High

18
Q

Temporal resolution of fMRI

A

long lag time

19
Q

Positives of fMRI

A

Doesn’t rely on radiation so is risk free unless metal in the body.

20
Q

Negatives of fMRI

A

Expensive in comparison to other techniques and have poor temporal resolution. Based on inference and can’t ethically induce anything. Expensive.
