Synaptic transmission Flashcards

1
Q

Transmission of impulses along a neuron.

A

Electrical
between neurons is chemical
When at rest the cell is negatively charged
If stimulated the inside of the cell becomes positively charged causing action potential.
The action potential creates an impulse along the neuron.

Q

Transmission between neurons

A

Impulse must cross the synaptic gap
Th electrical impulse reaches the presynaptic terminal and releases neurotransmitters from vesicles. The NT’s diffuse across the synapse and fit into shape specific receptor sites on the post synaptic membrane.

Q

Exitation and Inhibiton

A

Some NT’s are excitatory so stimulate other NT’s increasing the probability of action potential e.g adrenaline

Others are inhibitory and so decrease the probability of an action potential e.g serotonin.

the net effect is called summation which determines the extent the cell fires/
