Who are they?
They are people of First Nation and European heritage.
Where did they live?
Along fur trading routes.
Marriages?
Marriage helped create connections between the two cultures. NWC and HBC recognized the value of those marriages.
Where were the settlements?
In the red river area of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta. Also around the Great-lake area of Ontario, Quebec, near the Mackenzie River in BC and the NOrthwest territories.
Spiritual life?
They merged Christian beliefs with traditional metis practices.
What did they find important?
Fiddle music and intricate dancing.
Daily life?
Some lived in cabins and farmed while other lived in tents following buffalo herds.
Transportation methods?
Dogs, horses, oxen to pull carts, wagons, toboggans and sleds.
How was heritage passed down?
Through stories.
What was their language called?
Michif.
Women’s roles?
They acted as translators and were skilled in sewing and cooking. They made clothing as well.
Men’s roles?
They acted as guides, interpreters, as well as farmers, fishermen, and hunters.
Who would boys and girls “follow”?
Girls would follow their mother, and boys their dad.
Traditional foods?
Bannock, berries, fish, buffalo meat, vegetables and pemmican.
What is pemmican?
A mix of fried buffalo meat and fat with berries. Stored correctly it can last up to a year.
