‘Mood disorders’ (affective disorders)
Disabling moods, means disorder prevents individual leading normal life, at work, socially, within family- could cause diagnosis with depression or dipolar disorder.
Any disorder that affects your MOOD.
DEPRESSION
Common symptoms: reduced concentration, lack of self esteem, pessimism, disturbed sleeping, eating habits, sometimes ideas of self harm.
General loss of interest & increased tiredness = most typical symptoms, patients may complain of ‘feeling nothing’.
3 types of depression
Emotional
Physiological/Behavioural
Cognitive symptoms
Emotional depression
-Sadness
-Depressed mood
-Anhedonia (loss of pleasure in usual activities)
-Irritability
Physiological / Behavioural depression
-Sleep disturbance
-Appetitive Disturbance
-Hyposomnia
-Psychomotor retardation (difficulty in basic activities e.g walking up the stairs)
-Agitation
-Fatigue
-Loss of energy
Cognitive depression
-Poor concentration
-Indecisiveness
-Sense of worthlessness/ guilt
-Poor self-esteem
-Hopelessness
-Suicidal thoughts
-Delusions & Hallucinations with depressing themes
ICD 11 Classification of major depression
Mild depression diagnosis required 2 of 3 key symptoms to be present, plus another 2 symptoms.
4 or more symptoms present in total considered ‘moderate depression’
7 or more symptoms= ‘severe depression’
Symptoms of major depressive disorder must be present everyday/ nearly over course of at least 2 consecutive weeks to be considered diagnosed.
Key symptoms of depression
-Low mood: depressed mood for most of day, nearly daily, indicated by subjective self report (e.g feels sad, hopeless, empty) or observation by others (e.g appears tearful)
-Loss of interest and pleasure: Diminished interest/pleasure in almost all/all activities most of day, nearly everyday.
-Reduced energy levels: Lethargic, knock-on effect as people tend to withdraw from work, education and social life, extreme cases person cannot get out of bed.
