‘Psychosis’

A

General term for disorders involving loss of contact with reality- covers many disorders which may involves delusions (hallucinations causing person to lose sense of what is really happening in their life)
Can lead to withdrawing from outside world as person becomes more confused & disorientated.
Psychotic disorders characterised by delusions and disorganised speech/ behaviour, include all types of schizophrenia.

SCHIZOPHRENIA

A

Has positive and negative symptoms.
Positive = added to individuals behaviour- ‘clear cut’
Negative = loss of / absence of normal characteristics.

DSM classification for schizophrenia (symptoms described as positive or negative)
Positive symptoms:

A

Delusions- Irrational beliefs such as thinking you are someone famous (delusions of grandeur) or believing you are being prosecuted.

Hallucinations- Unusual sensory experiences such as hearing voices, seeing something not there, smell or any sense may be involved.

DSM classification for schizophrenia- Negative symptoms:

A

Losing emotional responses
Inability to feel pleasure
Lack of motivation
Cognitive deficits- though insertion, imping between thoughts, concepts, words.
Disorganised speech- reduced amount & quality of speech.
Disorganised aspects shown in chaotic speech or actions.

ICD-11 Classification of Schizophrenia

A

For schizophrenia diagnosis at least one clear cut symptom should be present during period of one month.
(Usually two more symptoms if less clear cut)
Cognitive deficits= persons mental health processes affected:
- Disorganised thought or speech-jumping between thoughts due to ‘loose association’ between concepts or words.
- Thought insertion- believing your thoughts are being places there by someone else.
