Anxiety disorders
Give continuous feeling of fear & anxiety often about things that will happen in future= disabling and can impose on daily functioning.
Can be triggered by something that may seen minor to others- can be triggers by non-existent threats that seem real to person.
Those with anxiety disorders often have physiological reactions such as increased heart rate & stomach problems.
Examples of anxiety disorders
Panic disorders, OCD, phobias, PTSD, other generalised anxiety disorders (GAD)
PHOBIAS
Definite, persistent fear of particular object or situation. Stimulus provokes immediate response, may be similar to panic attack.
Individual may experience physical symptoms e.g shortness of breath, palpitations, intense terror, may begin to lose control.
Even though individual knows fear is irrational- can still not control immense terror stimulus produces.
If fear disrupts day to day life of individual- this is considered clinical phobia, disorder may then be diagnosed.
ICD-11 Classification for a specific phobia
ICD-11 describes anxiety disorders as ‘Marked and persistent fear that is excessive and unreasonable’.
Exposure to phobic stimuli provokes immediate anxious response with at least 2 symptoms occurring together from list of 14 symptoms including panic attack, dry mouth, pounding heart, sweating, trembling, nausea, fear of dying, anger, crying, fleeing.
-Person recognises fear as excessive.
-Phobic situation is avoided.
-Symptoms restricted to or predominate in the feared situations or when thinking about them.
-Phobia disrupts persons normal life.
