Why did the Vikings come to England?
c789 to c865 Vikings raided England and Scotland attacking villages, towns, monasteries and abbeys
What changed in c865?
The Vikings wanted to settle in England for the fertile soil
Why did Normans conquer England?
They believed William was promised the English throne
Received support of the pope
English wealth, fertile soil and trading links made it an attractive place to settle
Why did Jews come to England?
William the Conqueror invited them over so he could borrow money and in 1070 they were given special status as property of the king
Why did Flemish weavers come to England?
Easy to find work after the black death and weavers were invited by Henry III
Why did Lombardy bankers come to England?
Hundred Year’s War caused instability and were invited by Henry III who offered royal protection
Why did Hansa merchants come to England?
Belonged to Hanseatic League and in 1003 Edward I gave them the right to trade as merchants
Experience of Vikings
Relations were generally good however became worse in 937 when Danelaw was put under Saxon control then relations improved in 1016 when Cnut became the first Danish king of England
Experience of Jewish migrants
1275 - Statue of Jewry made Jews wear a yellow armband and they were forced to stop charging interest on loans
1290 - Jews were expelled from England by Edward I
Experience of Flemish weavers
Had specialised skillls but were welcomed because they taught their skills to English weavers
Experience of Lombardy bankers
Became very rich especially after Jews were expelled in 1290
Experience of Hansa merchants
By mid 1400s they controlled most of the cloth industry
Impact of Vikings
Danelaw introduced ‘things’ who were members who voted on laws and agreed on a punishment for those they found guilty
Introduced words such as ‘skill’ and ‘husband’
Viking raids led to Saxons developing fortified towns
Impact of Normans
Introduced Forest Laws where the king controlled certain forests and you had to be given permission to enter
Introduced murdrum laws which was a fine paid by Saxons if a Norman was killed and the culprit wasn’t found
Introduced words such as ‘comfort’ and ‘leisure’
Introduced the feudal system
Normans built thousands of churches,cathedrals and monastries

Centre of Anglo Saxon government
Only mint in the North
Good trade routes inland and overseas
It was surrounded by fertile land

10,000-15,000 migrated to York between 867-950
York became multicultural city
Trade flourished as merchants used the old Roman roads and the River Ouse to trade inland and with European ports
