microscopes (light & electron) Flashcards
(10 cards)
What does the light microscope use to magnify specimens?
Light and glass lenses.
What are the 3 objective lenses in a light microscope?
LPO (4x), MPO (10x), HPO (40x).
What is the total magnification using the HPO?
400x (10x eyepiece × 40x objective).
Define resolution in microscopy.
The ability to distinguish detail or separate two close objects.
Why is the letter ‘e’ upside-down under a microscope?
The image is flipped due to the way lenses bend light.
What does an electron microscope use instead of light and lenses?
Electron beams and electromagnets.
What type of image does a SEM produce?
A 3D image of the surface.
What type of image does a TEM produce?
A 2D image of internal structures.
Name one advantage of a light microscope.
Cheaper, easier to use, can view live specimens.
Name one disadvantage of an electron microscope.
Expensive, cannot view live specimens.
