theory vs law, cell theory, organelles Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is the main difference between a theory and a law in science?
A theory explains a wide range of phenomena; a law describes a specific observed relationship.
Is Cell Theory a theory or a law?
A theory.
What are the three parts of Cell Theory?
1) Cell is the basic unit of life, 2) All organisms are made of cells, 3) All cells come from pre-existing cells.
Why is Cell Theory still a theory?
Questions remain about viruses, origin of the first cells, and whether organelles could be alive.
What is the function of the mitochondria?
Produces energy (ATP) through respiration.
What does the ribosome do?
Synthesises proteins.
What is the function of the cell membrane?
Controls what enters and exits the cell.
Which organelle is responsible for photosynthesis?
Chloroplast.
What makes a scientific diagram acceptable?
Clear lines, no shading, labeled with straight lines, done in pencil, 2D, and proportional.
What’s the difference between a plant and an animal cell?
Plant cells have cell walls, chloroplasts, and a large vacuole; animal cells do not.
