(4 cards)
1
Q
Somerset’s Rule as Lord Protector (1547–1549)
EDWARD
A
- Edward VI’s uncle ruled England as Lord Protector after Henry VIII’s death via the Regency Council.
- Unsuccessful: Poor handling of rebellions (e.g. Kett’s Rebellion), economic hardship, and power-hungrry arrogance led to his downfall and arrest.
2
Q
Northumberland’s Rule (1549–1553)
A
- Took over after Somerset; strengthened the Privy Council and restored stability.
- Sucessful: Improved financial situation, promoted reform through council governance, but failed politically by backing Lady Jane Grey’s succession (supported nepotism).
3
Q
Succession Crisis (1553)
EDWARD
A
- Northumberland tried to alter the succession in favour of Lady Jane Grey to block Mary I (AKA The Devyse for the Succession).
- Unsuccessful for Edward/Northumberland; successful for Mary: Mary I gained mass support and claimed the throne within 9 days; highlighted instability and factional politics.
4
Q
Re-establishment of the Privy Council under Mary
MARY
A
- Mary I relied heavily on a larger but more balanced Privy Council to govern because of her lack of political training (she was never expected to rule).
- Mixed succes: Helped with decision-making, but factional divisions and foreign influence (e.g. Philip of Spain) limited effectiveness and independence.
