Milgram's variations Flashcards
(15 cards)
Aim of Variation 7?
To see if proximity of giving orders would change obedience levels.
Sample of Variation 7?
40 American males via volunteer sampling (poster)
Procedure of Variation 7?
All procedure is the same as V1, however, the Yale researcher leaves the room and gives orders/prompts over the phone.
Results of Variation 7?
Obedience to 450V dropped significantly – 65% to 22.5%
Conclusion of Variation 7?
Immediacy of the order will change the level of obedience
Aim of Variation 10?
To see if the perceived level of strength the authority figure has will change the level of obedience, by using local research group over Yale University.
Sample of Variation 10?
40 American males via mailshot (post)
Procedure of Variation 10?
All procedure is the same as V1, however, the study is in a rundown, sparsely furnished office block and the researchers claim to be from the ‘research associates of Bridgeport.’
Results of Variation 10?
Obedience to 450V dropped – 65% to 48%.
Questioned the researchers credentials
Conclusion of Variation 10?
perceived authority of the order will change the level of obedience.
Aim of Variation 13?
To see the impact of power dynamic, if an ordinary man giving orders would affect obedience.
Sample of Variation 13?
20 American males
Procedure of Variation 13?
All procedure is the same as V1, however, 3 ‘participants’/ 2 confederates, teacher, learner, and note-taker (rigged draw).
- The experimenter left the room as the teacher was not told to increase the level of shocks in 15V increments.
- It was the note taker who suggested increasing the shocks every time he got an answer wrong.
Results of Variation 13?
Conclusion of Variation 13?
perceived authority of the order will change the level of obedience
