Social Practical Flashcards
(15 cards)
What was the aim of our social practical?
To find out whether there were differences between males and females and their obedience to authority
What was the hypothesis of our social practical?
There will be a difference between males and females and their levels of obedience, measured on an obedience questionnaire
What was the sample of our social practical?
50 males and 50 females from the North-East of England, aged 16-18
What was the procedure of our social practical?
We created a questionnaire of open and closed questions on a likert scale, all linked to key factors in obedience
‘‘how likely are you to pick up litter that wasn’t yours when told to by a teacher? 1 – highly unlikely 2 – unlikely 3 – likely 4 – highly likely.’ or open questions such as ‘would you tidy your room immediately if told to by your parent or guardian? Why/why not?’
- once written, we piloted the study to ensure it was coherent.
- We handed the questionnaires to an opportunity sample of the first 50 male and female students in the area.
- Once completed they were handed in and results were calculated.
What was the results of our social practical?
- Males showed less obedience to authority (10.10) compared to females (12.04).
- However, there was greater deviance in obedience for males than females (4.2 vs 1.6)
- Qualitative data suggests males don’t obey due to ‘embarrassment’ and pride’ but females obey due to ‘fear of consequence’.
What was the conclusion of our social practical?
There is a difference between males and females in obedience. Females are more likely to obey authority than males.
how is our social practical generalisable?
Not andro or gynocentric
how is our social practical NOT generalisable?
Ethnocentric - all from NE England, may be cultural bias such as local council etc.
how is our social practical reliable?
All given the same questionnaire, standardised.
how is our social practical applicable?
Can be used to understand why some people may be more likely to obey authority and how we can tackle those who are not.
how is our social practical NOT applicable?
Only correlational research
Ignores individual factors - reductionist.
how is our social practical valid?
Low demand characteristics, anonymous study.
Can compare quantitative data
Open questions - rich in detail
how is our social practical NOT valid?
Open questions - can’t compare directly - researcher bias.
Closed questions - can’t elaborate
how is our social practical ethical?
Confidentiality - no backlash if not obedient.
Fully debriefed
how is our social practical NOT ethical?
N/A, questionnaire, carried out within the Code of Conduct (2009)
