Mineral Functions Flashcards
(9 cards)
Fluoride
Make bones and teeh stronger, remineralize cavaites, suppresses bacteria, inhibts dental carries
Iodine
Thuroxine-horomone made by thyroid gland responsible for regulating BMR
Zinc
Works with proteins to help enzymes: make parts of the cells genetic materials, make heme in hemoglobin, hell pancreous with digestice functions, help metabloize CHO protein and fat, liberate vit A in liver, dispose of damaging free radicals
Selenium
Assist enzymes thst work with Vit E to
Prevent radical formation and oxidative damage, activates thyroxine
Iron
Oxygen carrying cells. Hemoglobin-red blood cells. Myoglobin- muscle cells help many enzymes use oxygen. Needed to make new cells, amino acids, horomones, and neurotransmitters
Potassium
Maintains fluid inside the cells, major role in maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance, critical to maintain heart meat
Sodium
Maintains fluid outside of cells, major role in fluid and electrolyte balance, acid-bace balance, muscle contractoon and transmition
Calcium
Never transmition, blood pressure, blood clotting, muscle contraction and heartbear
Magnesium
Assist in enzyme functions, energy metabolism, affects metabolism of potassium, calcium and vit D, protein formation, muscular relaxation, provides resistance to tooth decay
