Q

How many types of Grips are there?

A

3

Thumb on top ex. Opening screen door, very strong grip.
Good for power
Over extends wrist to horizontal on backcast, difficult choice for beginners.
“V” grip also strong grip
Index finger on top - accuracy cast, reduces wrist overbend on backcast - very similiar to variations of Gary Borgers Three Point Grip.

For accuracy I use Index on top,
For distance I change to one of other.

Q

Why is the shape of the loop so important?

A

In fly casting, the weight of the fly line pulls the fly through the air and delivers it to the target - Rather than having the weight of the lure pull the line off the reel like spin casting.

We need to control the shape of the Loop in the air to MINIMIZE WIND RESISTANCE.

In spin or bait casting, the weight we are casting is the weight of the lure, bait or sinker, not the line. When fly casting, we are normally casting flies that are too light to cast with spin or bait casting gear. Fly casting utilizes a special line, a fly line, that is the casting weight.

Q

HOW DO WE MAKE A GOOD BASIC LOOP WITH A STRAIGHT TOP LEG?

A

Mac Brown one sentence answer - “Begin with the fly line under tension applying rates of movement using proper timing along an intended rod tip path through the appropriate rod arc.” (https://macbrownflyfish.com/fly-casting/5-essentials-fly-casting/)

The basic motions of fly casting are very simple,

  1. Accelerate the fly rod through an arc then stop it.

2.When the rod tip decelerates, the fly line overtakes the rod tip and a loop forms.

  1. The path in which the fly rod tip travels while casting determines whether the top leg will be straight or curved.
  2. If the rod tip path is straight, the top leg will be straight. If the tip path is curved, the top leg will be curved and less efficient.

Q

WHAT DETERMINES HOW WE GET A STRAIGHT ROD TIP PATH?

A

The rod tip path is determined by the
“casting arc” and how the caster applies force
to the fly rod. The casting arc is just the angle
change of the fly rod during the cast (rod rotation).

Because the fly rod bends while casting, it is
possible for the rod tip path to be very straight.

Q

How to cast on windy days?

A
  1. Keep loops tight and low to water by adjusting trajectory, aim just about target;
  2. If casting harder - YOU MUST - lengthen casting stroke to avoid tailing loops.
  3. Long smooth powerful strokes (same techniques as long casts) that keep rod tip path straight
    * Open arc
    * apply more power
    * most do smoothly

Q

Why do we False Cast?

A

5 reasons:

  1. Add distance
  2. Measuring distance
  3. Dry wet fly
  4. Changing direction
  5. Making corrections - often ignored - include corrections in timing, rod angle, stroke length, load, and loop control

Q

Difference between “substance” and “style”?

A

Substance is necessary essentials (Grammel 5) for a good casting stroke.

Style is how you do perform these movements.
