Section 4 - Analysis And Correction Of Faulty Mechanics Flashcards
What are the 6 steps in Bruce Richards Six-Step Method?
- Watch the loop (what does it look like);
- Watch the tip path (which forms the top leg of the loop where all the flaws can be seen);
- What is the body motion or action (that caused the tip path problem);
- Change the body motion or action;
- Which changes the tip path;
- That results in the desired new loop shape.
What is common cause of Wide Loops?
Tip path - traveling in domed or convex tip path; or
Action - Too much rotation creating too wide a casting arc
What is common cause of Tailing Loops?
Tip path - Dipping or concave path
Action - Inappropriate application of force
Inapprop. casting are due to rod bend
Inapprop. casting arc due to creep
What is common cause of “slack”?
Tip Path - Timing of the movement
Action - Adjust the timing of the casting strokes, to correct a too long or too short pause between casting strokes.
What are the 6 common faults?
- Improper application of force;
- Slack;
- Poor tracking (bad rod tip path);
- Excessive wrist control (wide casting arc);
- Poor timing;
- Poor stops.
What are some cures for Excessive wrist control?
My 6:
Inverted reel
Lock Rod butt in sleeve or rubberband
Look at angle of hand and reel, keep constant
Use index finger on top grip
Lock wrist firm throughout arc
Stop with forearm at 12:00 or just out-of-sight
What are three cures for Poor Stops?
8
Pool noodles
Focus on stop/twitch or pop que
Flick water off paintbrush
Mac Browns pvc/nut tool
Instructor verbal cues
Watch loops form just out of rod tip and adjust stops until loop correct
Cast together with instructors hand on rod
Aim at a target to stop at
What are three cures for Improper Application of Force?
Pantomime smooth acceleration
Slow down acceleration of casting stroke
Listen for “swoosh” sound - means too fast
Listen for “crack” of fly - means casting to fast, energy did not burn off resulting in cracking sound
What are three cures for Slack?
5 way….
Correct lift in beginning
Accelerate w/ appropriate amount of force in casting stroke
Appropriate timing
Stop harder and twitch or flick wrist.
Look at backcast to see straightening line
What are three cures for Poor Timing?
Casting has tempo and rythym to it.
- Don’t wait to LONG or you will lose potential energy creating slack
- Don’t wait too SHORT of time or you will snap off fly, or pile leader in front of you.
CURES:
Use metronome on phone
Turn slightly sideways, rt foot back, to watch line unravel
Get into “rythym” swaying body while false casting to self-correct.
If line falling into pile in front of you, this is do to bad timing, not letting line rollout in front of you.
What are three cures for Poor Tracking?
Good tracking is maintaining the 180* rule.
- Use rope laid out in front and back to see where casts land;
- Use ipad with camera as mirror (reversed)
- If casts kick to left or right, backcast is swinging in opposite direction
- have rod tip follow a straight line on a house or something
- If loop not stacked rod tip not tracking straight
How to explain Faults using 6 step method to student?
CAUSE
1. Line - explain what line is doing;
2. Rod - explain what rod is doing to cause LINE problem;
3. Body - explain body movement (wrist, hand, arm, etc) causing rod & line to misbehave
CURE
4. Body - explain what to do differently;
5. Rod - explain what change to body does to make rod act differently;
6. Line - explain how rod movement will change what line does.
If putting hand on reel with student to help them feel correct movement, what must instructor do first?
- Explain what he is doing and why?
- Ask student permission
- Stand behind or on side of sudent
- If female student, have her stand behind instructor to feel more comfortable.
- If minor, ask parent permission.
