Mitosis Flashcards

(4 cards)

1
Q

significance of mitosis

A
  • mitosis produces daughter cells that are
genetically identical to the parent cell which
    gives genetic stability
    - mitosis allows damaged cells to be replaced
    by genetically identical ones
    - mitosis allows a tissue to increase its size
    with new genetically identical cells

Q

Tumour suppressor genes

A
  • control the cell cycle
  • if damaged, cells fail to divide, divided too often,
    or at the wrong time
  • mutation could affect the timing of the cell cycle
  • act as a brake and prevent the cell cycle from
    repeating continually
    - prevent rapid replication that would
    lead to a tumour formation
