Mitosis Flashcards
(4 cards)
1
Q
significance of mitosis
A
- mitosis produces daughter cells that are
genetically identical to the parent cell which
gives genetic stability
- mitosis allows damaged cells to be replaced
by genetically identical ones
- mitosis allows a tissue to increase its size
with new genetically identical cells
2
Q
Tumour suppressor genes
A
- control the cell cycle
- if damaged, cells fail to divide, divided too often,
or at the wrong time - mutation could affect the timing of the cell cycle
- act as a brake and prevent the cell cycle from
repeating continually
- prevent rapid replication that would
lead to a tumour formation
3
Q
Proto-oncogenes
A
genes that have the potential to cause cancer if mutated
4
Q
oncogenes
A
genes that have been mutated and can cause cancer.
