Q

Prophase

A
  • chromosomes condense become shorter and thicker
  • pairs of centrioles separate and move to the opposite poles of the cell
  • Protein microtubules form, making spindle, from pole to pole
  • Nuclear envelope disintegrates and nucleolus disappears
  • Pairs of chromatids can be seen lying free in the cytoplasm

Q

Metaphase

A
  • centromere of the chromosomes attaches to the spindle fibres
  • chromosomes line up on the equator

Q

Anaphase

A
  • very rapid stage
  • spindle fibres shorten
  • centromeres separate
  • spindle pulls the chromatids to the poles
    - centromere first

Q

Telophase

A
  • final stage
  • chromatids reached the poles
    - chromosomes
  • chromosomes uncoil and lengthen
  • spindle fibres break down
  • nuclear envelope reforms and nucleolus reappears
