Stages of mitosis Flashcards
(5 cards)
1
Q
Stages of mitosis
A
- prophase
- metaphase
- anaphase
- telophase
2
Q
Prophase
A
- chromosomes condense become shorter and thicker
- pairs of centrioles separate and move to the opposite poles of the cell
- Protein microtubules form, making spindle, from pole to pole
- Nuclear envelope disintegrates and nucleolus disappears
- Pairs of chromatids can be seen lying free in the cytoplasm
3
Q
Metaphase
A
- centromere of the chromosomes attaches to the spindle fibres
- chromosomes line up on the equator
4
Q
Anaphase
A
- very rapid stage
- spindle fibres shorten
- centromeres separate
- spindle pulls the chromatids to the poles
- centromere first
5
Q
Telophase
A
- final stage
- chromatids reached the poles
- chromosomes - chromosomes uncoil and lengthen
- spindle fibres break down
- nuclear envelope reforms and nucleolus reappears
