Mitotsis Flashcards
(11 cards)
What are the stages of mitosis?
prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase (and after cytokinesis)
What is interphase?
part of the cell cycle where the DNA replicates itself in preparation for cell division, sometimes included in mitosis
Explain the purpose of mitosis in growth and repair
It is crucial for growth and repair because it produces new cells with the same genetic information as the parent cell, ensuring the body can replace damaged or worn out cells and grow new tissue.
What is mitosis?
Mitosis is a type of cell division that occurs in somatic cells (non sex cells). During mitosis, a single cell divides into two identical daughter cells, which is essential for growth, repair and maitenence of tissues and multicellular organisms.
What is prophase?
the chromatin compacts into chromosomes, the condensed chromosomes are now two identical copies (sister chromatids) joined together at a point called centromere, nuclear membrane breaks down, spindle fibres form from the centrioles
What is metaphase?
chromosomes line up in middle of cell, spindle fibres attach to the centromere of each chromosome
What is anaphase?
spindle fibres pull apart sister chromatids, chromatids move to opposite ends of cell
What is telophase?
chromatids reach opposite ends, nuclear membranes reform around each set of chromosomes, chromosomes uncoil back to chromatin, cell has two nuclei
What is cytokinesis?
occurs near end of telophase, cytoplasm divides forming two seperate daughter cells, each cell has same number of chromosomes as original
Why is it important the amount of chromosomes stay the same in mitosis?
It is important they stay the same so new cells receive a complete and identical set of genetic instruction for proper growth and repair
Stages of interphase
unwind (enzyme unzips the DNA), nucleotide complementary bind the base pairing, rebuilding, two new strand consisting of one parent (old) and one new strand are created
