causes of mitral regurgitation
post MI: papillary muscles are affected
mitral valve prolapse
infective endocarditis
rheumatic fever
congenital
presentation of mitral regurgitation
most are asymptomatic
fatigue, SOB and oedema
pansystolic blowing murmur heard at the apex
S1 quiet
investigations for mitral regurgitation
ECG: broad P wave (atrial enlargement)
cardiomegaly on chest x-ray
echo
treatment of mitral regurgitation
medical in acute: nitrates, diuretics, positive inotropes and intra-aortic balloon pump
if patients in HF: ACEi + BB and spironolactone
surgery
