Modies, Crime, Ineffective Gov Resp Flashcards
(7 cards)
1 PEE on ineffective Govern response (SVRU)
Another way in which government responses to crime have been ineffective is the Scottish violence reduction unit. This means that although the SVRU have reduced many forms of violent crime, it doesn’t seem to be very effective when it comes to assault. Evidence of this is that assault was found to go down by 11% in CIRV clients, but 14% in non-clients.
1 PEE on ineffective govern responses (in prison)
One way in which government responses to crime have been ineffective is short term prison sentences. This means some people repeatedly go to jail for short term prison sentences for similar reasons. Evidence of this is the highest reoffending rates are for children aged 15-17 released from custody having served twelve months or less in a young offender institution.
1 PEE on ineffective govern response (CPO)
Another way that the government response to crime has been ineffective is through Community Payback Orders (CPO’s). This means that although CPO’s aim to subject offenders to carry out unpaid work, the ways in which they do so may not always be effective. Evidence of this is a requirement such as restrictive movement requires someone to stay in a location for up to 12 hours a day which may enforce restlessness, resentment and anti-social behaviour
1 PEE on ineffective govern response (VRU)
A third reason why the governments responses to tackling crime has been ineffective is the Violence Reduction Unit. This means the VRU was set up to tackle gang crime in Glasgow and Scotland but gang crime still occurs. Evidence of this is there was a drive by murder of a gang member in Glasgows Maryhill area in 2018 according to Crime and Law in the Uk textbook
1 PEE on ineffective govern responses (white collar)
Another way in which the government responses to crime have been ineffective is in tackling white collar crime.
Evidence of this is in 2022 ex-Glasgow east MP Natalie Mcgarry was found guilty of embezzling £55,000 and prosecutors only recovered £66.36.
This means that the government needs to do more to help ensure that criminal proceeds are taken back.
1 PEE on ineffective govern responses (antisocial behaviour)
Another way in which the government responses to crime have been ineffective is tackling antisocial behaviour.
Evidence of this is during 2022, England & Wales’s police forces received over 1 million crime reports about anti-social behaviour.
This means that communities are left feeling vulnerable and that not enough is being done to address this problem
1 PEE on ineffective govern responses (rising crime rate)
One way in which government responses to crime have been ineffective is rising crime rates.
Evidence of this is the 6.7 million crimes recorded March 2022-23 were 11% higher compared with pre-covid levels.
This means that the government are failing to tackle rising crime rates and they are not responding effectively.
