Scope of Practice in Med Surg
used to delineate actions that are legally permitted for a particular profession based on educational qualifications
Independent actions within the scope of practice
are within a nurse’s scope of practice to perform or initiate independently
Dependent actions within the scope of practice
requires an order from the MD, DO, PA, NP
Patient and family-centered care (Delivery Models)
cared for by interdisciplinary groups of healthcare providers. Involved active involvement and collaboration
Collaborative practice (Delivery Models)
Healthcare providers perform their jobs while sharing decision-making responsibilities
Care across the continuum (Delivery Models)
ensures inpatient and outpatient providers are on the same page

Delegation
The RN can delegate to another RN, LPN, or UAP
The LPN can delegate to another LPN or UAP
5 rights of delegation
The right task, right circumstance, right person, right direction and communication, and right supervision and evaluation
Things to be delegated (RN>LPN)
Administering medications, Administering enteral feedings, Reinforcing patient teaching, Monitoring findings (r/t assessment)
Things to be delegated (RN>UAP)
ADLs, bathing, grooming, feeding, ambulating, positioning, Is and Os, VS (on stable patient)
Nurse’s role in the management of care
ADPIE, interdisciplinary collaboration
Nurse’s role in safety and infection control
utilizes evidence-based to prevent infection, medical and surgical asepesis
Nurse’s role in health promotion
Includes an element of self-responsibility
Health promotion occurs throughout the lifespan and activities should be planned accordingly
Define health promotion
the process of enabling people to increase control over their health and its determinants thereby improving health
Healthy people initiative
Health conditions, Health behaviors, Varied populations, Settings and systems, and Social determinants affecting health. These goals are set to be reached by 2030
Acute illness
short-term, curable with treatment options (ex. cold or sprained ankle)
Chronic illness
long term, CDC defines as a disease process lasting longer the >1 year, with no cure only symptom management. (ex. diabetes and COPD)
Terminal illness
usually results in death, no cure (ex. cancer and Alzheimer’s)
Culture
similarities shared among members of a group
Cultural diversity
existence of varied cultural groups within a society
Cultural competence
understand and address the entire cultural context of each client within the realm of the care delivered
Cultural sensitivity
being knowledgeable about the cultures, prevalent in their area of practice
