intervention activity
an activity that is consciously designed to teach language
(games, routines, books, school themes or activity centres, play-based situations, naturally-occuring situations)
intervention activities should be ((6)
1- developmentally appropriate (suitable for the child’s development of play, cognition, interactino) ex: wh questions (ToM)
2- relevant (be fun and entice child to participate, interact, communicate) ex: telling puppet about past
3- suitable to the goal (elicit the goal naturally) ex: story telling/retelling (pronouns he she)
4-culturally unbiased (not outisde of child’s experience, socially or culturally) ex: fruit salad vs Mcdo (third sing -s)
5- fun and motivating (focus on language while appearing to play) ex: ask questions vs game (in on )
6- concentrated (repead, emphsize, vary position)
ex: ask DO you to many kids
types of theapy activities (6)—
1- routines or scripts (describe sequences onf events in context) hierarchical and sequential organization, internal structure modifiable to some extent, use memory structures) ex: patty-cake, dressing, bathing, feeding, bday parties, shopping… turn taking and naturalistic events in child’s life
2- joint action routines (JAR)
similar to scripts, roles and propt, role play a set sequence
3- whole language activites: listening to stories, acting out stories, crafts, movements related to story
4- joint book reading: use repetitive language in context of book, adult scaffolds for the child, pauses so the child can contribue, helps extension of utterances as knowledge increases, usse books that target a form
5- songs, rhymes, finger play routines: same way as books
6- classroom themse, and routines: use classroom as context for language intervnetion, child initiation followed up with appropirate language input, modify activity for child with SLI, books, story -> deepen understaning of use of language as a character
