what are the access requirements for fire and rescue?

Provision of adequate water supplies Will be met if:

If the building is provided with sufficient internal fire mains and other facilities to assist firefighters in their tasks

If there is sufficient means of access into

If the building is provided with adequate means for venting heat and smoke from fire in a basement

If there is sufficient means of external access to enable fire appliances to be brought near to the building for effective use

A

.. Strong enough to bear the weight of fire appliances
•Wide enough
•Have no low obstructions across the road
•If longer than 20m have an area where fire appliances can turn around.

Liaise with local fire & rescue authority to determine the requirements, as not all vehicles are standard.

when is a fire main required?

A

.. Tall buildings
•Any buildings over 18m height
•Building with higher people or contents risk
•Shops, commercial, assembly, entertainment & industrial over 7.5m with floors over 900m².
•Deep buildings
•Basements below 10m or two or more basement levels both over 900m².
These buildings will require a firefighting shaft with fire main.

firefighting lift requirements?

A

.. •These lifts may be used daily by the building’s occupants but, unlike a normal passenger lift, a fire fighting lift is designed to operate for as long as practicable when there is a fire in the building, thereby allowing it to be used to transport fire fighters and their equipment to any floor.
•The lift car should be conspicuously marked:
‘FIRE FIGHTING LIFT : DO NOT USE FOR GOODS OR REFUSE’

To safeguard firefighters in the event of fire, the responsible person must ensure that the premises facilities, equipment and devices provided for the use or protection of firefighters are maintained in an efficient state, efficient working order, and in good repair.
Guidance in British Standards and manufacturers’ instructions as to testing, maintenance & frequency.

what affects do access and FF facilities have on the Fire risk assessment?

A

.. Do the access & facilities achieve current guidance?
•If not how may this affect the safety of any persons in the building, can they be rescued?
•Make sure that any changes have not affected the access arrangements
•Is there liaison between the FRS & responsible person?
•Is relevant information (keys, keyholder, plans, special risks etc.) available for the fire & rescue service when they arrive?
