What is the meaning of religion?
A system of beliefs and practices that guides how people live.
What does religion offer?
Religion offers particular insights and understandings about life. These find expression in a variety of religious beliefs, teachings and practices.
What are the religions of the world?
Gatherings of people who share common beliefs about their experiences of a God or gods.
What does it mean to be religious?
Being religious requires an understanding of a particular religion and a willingness to consider a range of different ‘measures of religiosity’.
What are some indicators of being religious?
- How frequently a person practice elements of a religious way of life
- What a person says they believe in and how their behaviour matches the beliefs of that religion
- Religious participation, adherence, observance, practice and identity.
What are the main characteristics of a religion?
Religious, belief, teaching, writings, rituals, practice, celebrations, leaders, laws and sacred places.
What are examples of some world religions?
- Buddhism
- Islam
- Hinduism
What role does religion play in the search for meaning?
In the search for meaning people encounter and respond to different answers. Many people come to recognise that what they search for is answered in the presence of the divine. All religions place the experience of the divine at their centre.
How do followers express their religion?
Followers of each religion also come together to express aspects of their religion through worship, celebrations, rituals, and by observing special events and seasons.
What are the characteristics of a religion?
- Develop particular ideas about their God/s
- Share common understandings about basic human questions (purpose of life, life after death)
- Share memories handed down through gens
- Worship, using common rituals/prayers
- Develop codes of behaviour based on understanding of how divine expects them to behave
Why may people ignore the existence of God?
- Secularism
- Atheism
- Agnosticism
- Humanism
What is the purpose of Catholic religion?
To promote, support and develop within each person their ability to listen to, be in touch with and respond to their questions of the human heart.
What are the pillars of the Catholic faith?
- The Creed - support way people think/behave
- The 10 Commandments - provide guidance for daily living
- The Sacraments - Christians come together to celebrate faith & encounter God in community
- The Lord’s Prayer - Providing prayer as way of experiencing God.
How do the pillars of the Catholic faith benefit people?
They contribute to the personal, religious development of a person and can occur at both an individual and community level.
What is a religious belief?
A conviction about an idea central to a religion that expresses a religious truth. They offer particular insights and understandings about life.
What is a religious teaching?
An official statement of a religious belief. They guide and inform how people respond to religious belief.
What are religious writings?
Include stories, poems, hymns, wise sayings etc.
- Related to significant teachings of a religion
What are religious rituals?
Use symbolic actions, such as movement, gestures and words to express and promote what is important about faith
What is a religious practice?
A recognised way of doing something religious. Refer to a broad range of experiences that relate to many aspects of religious life. Will often use religious signs and symbols.
What is a religious celebration?
Special times when religious communities join together in worship, prayer or to celebrate a religious festival
What is a sacred place?
Special and sacred places to communicate with God.
What is a religious leader?
Particular people expected to play special roles to help the general community to relate with God.
- Role is to teach others different ways of communicating with God.
What is a religious law?
Codes of behaviour that help people avoid doing anything that will damage their relationship with God.
