Module 3✌️ Flashcards
(6 cards)
Why do bond enthalpies have positive values?
Bond breaking is endothermic
Standard enthalpy change of combustion?
The enthalpy change that takes place when 1 mole of a substance reacts completely with oxygen under standard conditions, with all reactants and products in their standard states.
Exothermic?
- a reaction that releases heat
- has a negative ^H
Why standard enthalpy change of combustion will be different from the ones calculated by average bond enthalpies?
- actual bond enthalpies may be different from average values
- non standard conditions
Standard enthalpy change of formation?
The enthalpy change that takes place when 1 mole of a compound is formed from its elements under standard conditions, with all reactants and products in their standard states, 25c and 101 kPa
Reasons for difference between calculated value and one obtained experimentally?
Incomplete combustion
Non standard conditions
