Guidelines for using restraints

A
  1. The patient and family must be told the reasons for use
  2. Should be used as a last resort and should be discontinued as soon
    as possible
  3. Restraints require a HCP order at least every 24 hours
  4. The least restrictive restraint should be tried first
  5. The patient must be assessed for skin integrity, hydration, toileting,
    at least every hour and restraint removed every shift
  6. Restraints must be removed with an alternative tried at least every
    shift to confirm the need
