Module 4 Flashcards
(11 cards)
How to anchor a vein
Place the thumb of your non dominant hand approx 2 inches below the intended site of insertion. Hold down firmly with a slight distal tug downward.
what kind of needle should be used for ETS method venipuncture?
21-23 Gauge, 1-1.5 in long hollow needles with a beveled edge
the most common additives in tubes
Anticoagulants or clot activators
Why use the syringe method?
used for Pt. who have fragile veins that collapse easily; the plunger the barrel of the syringe allows you to manually adjust the rate that the blood is withdrawn from the Pt.and therefore prevents the collapsing of fragile veins
First choice vein for venipuncture on a child or adult
Median cubital Vein
Second Choice vein for venipuncture on a child or adult
Cephalic Vein
Third choice vein for venipuncture on a child or adult
Basilic Vein
Characteristics of ideal Vein
well anchored
feels spongy and bouncy to the touch
is straight and easy to access with a needle
Best site choice for dermal punctures children or adults
middle and ring fingers on the non dominant hand
what can be used if a tourniquet is not available?
A BP cuff pumped to 40 mm/Hg
What angle should be used for venipuncture in the antecubital area?
insert the needle at 15 degrees to 30 degree angle, depending on the depth of the vessel. The deeper the vein is located in the arm, the greater the angle, not to exceed 30 degrees. A vein close to the surface of the skin should be collected at a shallower angle, no shallower than 15 degrees.
