What is population health?

A

Population health approach- positioned in public health agency of canada as a unifying force for the entire spectrum of health system interventions.
“Population health refers to the health of a population as measured by health status indicators and as influenced by social, economic, and physical environments, personal health practces, etc….”
arose in early 1990’s as a result of social determinants of health (macro level conditions that impact health)

How did health promotion evolve, including social context?

A
  • Sanitary movement in 17th century; florence and snow era; epidemics
  • Communicable disease in the 18th century; germ theory & transmission of disease1974: Lalonde Report proposed that changes in lifestyles or social and physical environments would likely lead to more improvements in health

1983: population health traced back to graduate seminar in health sciences at McMaster University
1986: The Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion provided framework for health promotion
1989: the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIAR) introduced the population health concept, proposing that individual determinants of health do not act in isolation
1994: the population health approach was officially endorsed by the federal, provincial and territorial Ministers of Health in a report entitled Strategies for Population Health: Investing in the Health of Canadians

A

SIMILAR- maintenance or improvement of health and wellbeing within populations, reduction of inequities between populations
DIFFERENT- population health= biomedical focus, pop. is sum of individuals emphasis on social structure and changing SDOH, emphasizes human life course, looks and science and evidence
DIFFERENT- health promotion= social movement, holistic, populations are more than sum of individuals, share collective characteristics, emphasizes health and wellness, stories and voices, naturalistic inquiry
