history is non-linear (cyclical), theme is any behaviors deemed uncommon or that deviated from sociocultural norms of the time were abnormal and individuals who exhibited were isolated, ridiculed, and ostracized
What are the three main etiological theories of mental illness?
Supernatural
Somatogenic theories
psychogenic theories
Explain supernatural theory
mental illness is result of evil spirits, displeasure of gods, eclipses, planetary gravitation, curses, and sin. preceding science, these were religious and philosophical explanations of uncommon behavior. (trephination - drill holes in skull)
Explain somatogenic theory
disturbances in physical functioning resulting from either illness, genetic inheritance, or brain damage/imbalance. Hippocrates tried to separate superstition and religion from medicine by 4 bodily fluids and temperaments - blood (carefree, happy), yellow bile (volatile, irritable), black bile (introspective, apathetic), phlegm (lazy)
explain psychogenic theory

Recite how the majority of psychoactive drugs work in the brain
all psychoactive drugs interfere with or alter how neurons communicate with each other via manipulation of NT. either increase activity at synapse (agonists) or decrease (antagonists)
Differentiate the theoretical models of health explaining the role stress plays in each .
Examine psychological factors that contribute to resilience and improved health
Explain how mindset influences our behavior, successes, and failures
Articulate the leading psychological advances in the practice of medicine
